Geocaching

Geocaching is a relatively new and worldwide sport - hobby developed with the advent of GPS (Global Positioning Satellite) handheld devices. Combining hiking and treasure hunting, geocaching involves hiking to a set of coordinates (longitude and latitude) to find a "cache." Caches are normally left in locations of interest and contain at least a log book but often there are also items for trade. If you like an adventure, geocaching is for you. For me it a perfect activity to get away from the computer screen and explore areas that I never would have known existed. If your new to an area its a great way to discover your surroundings.

I first started caching with my old Garmin 12 GPS and then upgraded to Magellan Meridian Platinum. The Garmin was perfectly suitable for geocaching but I like gadgets, so the Meridian was purchased for its bonus features such as auto-routing, detailed maps and electronic compass. Now over a year into the sport I have changed equipment again. With the desire to have voice road navigation (TOM TOM) and paperless caching system I now use a IPAQ pocketpc coupled with a wireless/bluetooth SIRF III chipset GPS unit and various navigation software. I miss the electronic compass of the Meridian, but the other benefits of having a PDA out weigh this.

Just as much fun as hunting for a geocache is the hiding of one. Below is a chart of all the caches I have placed in the United Kingdom so far. I attempt to place 1 cache for every 10 I find. The chart is created dynamically from the geocaching.com site so it always up to date.
