05/26/2005: "Introducing...The hardtop"
Thanks to an eBay bargain and quick trip up to Bedford, the landrover now sports a full hardtop roof with windows.
Gave it a quick splash of newly purchased NATO Green, which turns out to be not the colour of the rest of paintwork
(probably olive drab !). Have not touched the roof section, not sure if to paint white/cream or more NATO green. Will be brushing over the rest of landrover tomorrow, then I'll decide about roof panel.
I think this configuration looks more respectable than the redneck pick-up truck cabin which I never liked from day 1. Not as good looking as a full canvas roof but probably more practical.
This roof came from an SFX reg'd landrover. The SFX index range belonged to a series of land rovers commissioned by the Home Office for Civil Defence operations. Here is what google turns up about the intended use of these vehicles :
The vehicles were tasked to head in the direction of a reported Nuclear Blast at H+1 hour or thereabouts. They followed 3 parallel paths with one vehicle in reserve on the centre path. Periodic radiation measurements were taken inside the vehicle and by knowing the Protection Factor (pretty Low!) the outside value could be estimated and sent back to be plotted at Area control for the big picture.
Poor buggers.
