11/14/2004: "Some Car Maintenance"

mood: Got a bad eye

The Marlin Berlinetta got yet another new battery, 3rd one in 4 years. This time just fitted a cheapy (£32.00 crazy ) with only a rating of 44 Amp Hour which is same as what is fitted to a Pinto Ford Sierra (or so they said). The knackered one I removed was a 50Ah.

Also fitted a battery cut-off switch. Because I can leave the car long periods between usage I think things like the radio memory and clock are slowly killing the battery. With the cut-off switch open nothing will be stealing the juice.

Not many places to fit the switch so I elected to mount it onto the hinged battery clamp bracket and rewired the cables to suit.

There has been a made for trickle charge solar panel attached for last 6 months, next to useless in practice and also in theory when you do the math.
The terminals are coated in graphite contact grease.
Stones? possible yes but pretty hard for a stone to get in that location. I have a lead tray that the battery sits in, I will fish it out. I had forgot I still had it. The last battery was too big to use tray.

Leave everything on, and buy a cheapo solar panel charger, plugs in your lighter and keeps things flowing, you may find some corrosion buildup with no drain on your terminal. Do you have rubber under your battery ? do little stones not wear away at the bottom of your battery?
